  1. MEN ARE FROM MARS; WOMEN AREN’T

The couple leant on the esplanade railings, watching the parade of boats that marked the end of the week-long regatta.

She thought the lights on the boats looked like diamonds sparkling in the candlelight of a Victorian ball. The reflections were like tears of despair, disillusionment and departure trembling on the edge of eyelashes. Unbidden, a picture of the boy she had loved so deeply when she was nineteen years old flashed into her mind. She pushed it away, behind a door locked and bolted.

He wondered whether the lights were LEDs and whether he would ever be able to afford a boat now that he was married and his wife was talking about children. Unbidden, a picture of life as a single man, so exciting, so materially focussed, flashed into his mind. He pushed it away, behind a door locked and bolted.

They turned and walked silently home, hand in hand.
