Once again your page won’t let me comment so : Well, that’s one way of being caught short. Fun piece.

Sorry for these interment glitches, Doug. We should blame the weather.
And thanks… I don’t think the Rances thought of that…

MEN ARE FROM MARS; WOMEN AREN’T
The couple leant on the esplanade railings, watching the parade of boats that marked the end of the week-long regatta.
She thought the lights on the boats looked like diamonds sparkling in the candlelight of a Victorian ball. The reflections were like tears of despair, disillusionment and departure trembling on the edge of eyelashes. Unbidden, a picture of the boy she had loved so deeply when she was nineteen years old flashed into her mind. She pushed it away, behind a door locked and bolted.
He wondered whether the lights were LEDs and whether he would ever be able to afford a boat now that he was married and his wife was talking about children. Unbidden, a picture of life as a single man, so exciting, so materially focussed, flashed into his mind. He pushed it away, behind a door locked and bolted.
They turned and walked silently home, hand in hand.

Ain’t that the truth, Angela?
I like your remake of the book title better than the original!
Beautifully told and crafted story.

Oh! This makes me sad. Let’s hope they can hang in there long enough to remix dreams with kids. Or barring that, a happy retirement for both, kids grown!

Thank you for the kind comments. I really enjoy looking at a photo and trying to imagine a story that goes with it. When the story appeals to other people, it’s a definite plus.

Two people lost in their own thoughts – the parallels and contrasts so deftly shown. The ‘hand in hand’ at the end takes on so much more significance than it would without that glimpse into their thoughts. Fabulous.

Something a bit different from me this time: memoir. One has to go with the idea that comes, and this was it.

WP won’t let me comment in your page so: Of course a Douglas (without an inflated ‘s’) would never have made that rookie error. 🙂
