  1. THE LAST BUS

The No.59 lurched into the bus depot and onto its parking bay. The driver, Jim, yawned and stretched. It had seemed a very long shift and he was looking forward to going home.

He finished his paperwork and collected the evenings’ earnings then started to check the lower deck for lost property or any drunks who might just have slipped off their seat and been having a sly kip under the one in front of them. Nae problems there. Now for the upper deck.

He climbed the stairs and walked slowly towards the front of the bus. All good. As he turned around, he saw a man in the back row behind the stairs, leaning against the window and apparently asleep.

“C’mon, pal. We’re at the depot. Ye’ll hae to get aff noo.”

No reaction. Jim walked up to him and was about to give him a good shake when he noticed the man’s jacket, soaked in blood, and his face, grey and lifeless.

A string of swear words took Jim quickly down the stairs and accompanied his run over to the office. The shift supervisor saw him coming and opened the door to meet him.

“Call the polis. Quick. There’s a dead body on ma bus.”

Both men turned and hurried back to the office. The supervisor opened the door and muttered, “Shite.”

Jim replied, “Oh aye, this is shite alright. I recognised the guy and it’s..”

    The door closed.

  2. You had me at the number 59 bus, Angela. Those were the days, eh? And a nice slice of Glasgow life, neatly rounded off with… What? Who? My imagination is in overdrive. Good one.
