An interesting take on the photo – and obviously a place beyond of the reach of the mater familias!

Not too inspired this week. Couldn’t get the quote out my head so that stymied my imagination a bit (a lot!).
TRAVELLING HOPEFULLY
Could this really be it? Saint-Raphaël-Vallescure? A place of beauty, his new acquaintance at last night’s hostel had said. A place where his entire life could change in an instant. The station seemed so dilapidated, with weeds growing along and amid the tracks, and a building that could not even lay claim to Brutalist style. It was just plain, boring, old concrete and no amount of bright orange paint could convince him otherwise.
He thought of the early railway posters he’d seen, with lithesome women and a beautiful coastline. He’d googled images for the town and found an abundance of photos of the golf course. Was that all the town had to offer? Surely not.
He stepped off the train, hoisted up his backpack and headed across to the seafront. A wonderful meal and a couple of glasses of cool rosé improved his mood somewhat. Enough for a stroll and a look at the water craft while he decided what to do. Yes, the town was picturesque down here but he wanted more. He remembered a subject from the school debating club several years ago: “It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive.”
Back to the station, then, and a train inland to the more historical and cultural Aix-en-Provence. Surely that was a place worth arriving at?

St Raphael is actually not a bad place, but Aix is fabulous!
Neat take, Angela,

Yes, I knew I was being a bit unfair on Saint-Raph. but needs must when literary inspiration fails!!

Great portrayal of a disappointed traveller, Angela.
But don’t we always tend to want more?

Not sure, Jenne. Usually the thrill of seeing somewhere new is enough unto itself. Having said that, I’ve never managed to get a handle on Melbourne and, with the exception of two or three superb exhibitions there, don’t like it all that much. I also have memories of wandering off the beaten track in Grasse and not enjoying the experience. Mostly, though, I’ve enjoyed places I’ve been to – and have a long list of European places that I have never seen and probably never will.

Excellent read, Angela.
On the road to find out, perhaps?

Sometimes we have to pass through some rough, tired neighborhoods before we reach the perfect end of the line. But maybe the journey is the real ticket?

A portrait of a jaded traveller. Even the wine only helped a little to lift his spirits. Can too much travel be his problem? Maybe some downtime at home is what he needs. Well told.
