  1. A TALE OF TWO WHEELS

Why don’t you get a bike, they said.
It’ll move those legs and clear your head.
    And so I bought a chic two-wheeler,
A great idea, and a great healer.

I pedalled here, I pedalled there.
I let the wind blow in my hair.
I waited for the pounds to drop
(I wanted an excuse to stop).

Then by the canal one sunny day
I let my scant attention stray.
I failed to see the left-hand turn.
Yes, I was going to crash and burn.

I re-emerged, not burnt but soggy,
    Rescued by a helpful doggy.
My pride was hurt; so was my bike.
So here I am, out for a hike.

  2. Here’s mine, a look in on some older bicyclists in rural Minnesota, in a nonexistent county. But it could be, if you just close your eyes and let the wheels turn…

“Hey Emil, where ya headed?” Olaf cycled like Old Nick himself, trying to catch up with his childhood friend.
Emil slowed his bicycle and halted, gingerly slipping off the extra-wide seat that Dorothea had gifted him to encourage his getting in shape, on account of his tricky ticker. He sorely missed her dark black coffee, her cardamom buns, even her often sharp tongue. But she’d made him promise before she died, and two years later, he was fit enough to give Olaf a run for his money…
